If you’re looking for a great way to start your day, you can’t go wrong with this Americano Misto.

This drink combines some of your favorite flavors and will make your morning so much more enjoyable. The best part about this drink is that it is effortless to make at home.

Quick Answer: What is an Americano Misto?

An Americano Misto is a type of espresso drink. It combines equal parts hot water and espresso coffee, and it’s then topped with steamed milk for a balanced coffee taste.

Americano Misto: What Is It and How to Make It at Home?

Below, I’ll discuss what this drink is made from, the number of calories, the best coffee to use, and a full guide to making the coffee. Grab a cup of coffee and start reading away!

What is an Americano Misto?

As I’ve mentioned above, an Americano Misto is a coffee drink made with equal parts espresso coffee and hot water, and it adds steamed milk for the ultimate treat!

This coffee is different from a Caffè Misto. A Caffè Misto uses equal parts brewed coffee and steamed milk, while an Americano Misto uses espresso coffee.

Americano Misto.

An Americano Misto is incredibly easy to make and requires just a few ingredients that you probably already have at home.

Below, I’ll go in-depth about the ingredients used and how you can switch things up:

What ingredients are in an Americano Misto?

The ingredients list of an Americano Misto is rather small. You can make this incredible coffee with just the following components:

  • Espresso coffee
  • Hot water
  • Steamed milk

The fun part about this recipe is that you can make this drink however big you’d like. If you’re like me and enjoy a larger amount of coffee to start the day, you want to use two espresso shots per drink.

Have a look below for a full breakdown of how you can change the ratios of coffee, water, and milk:

Amount of espresso:Amount of water:Amount of milk:The total amount of coffee:
1 oz (30 ml)1 oz (30 ml)2 oz (60 ml)1/2 cup (0.12 l) of coffee
2 oz (60 ml)2 oz (60 ml)4 oz (120 ml)1 cup (0.24 l) of coffee
3 oz (90 ml)3 oz (90 ml)6 oz (180 ml)1 1/2 cups (0.36 l) of coffee
4 oz (120 ml)4 oz (120 ml)8 oz (240 ml)2 cups (0.48 l) of coffee

You can use the table above to make any amount of this amazing coffee at once. It’s a great way to produce more than one cup of coffee and serve it immediately.

I’ll be using whole milk for this recipe as it gives me the best and most flavorful taste that I enjoy with the stronger espresso shots.

However, you can use any milk or milk alternatives you prefer. If you’re unsure but would like to use a milk alternative, I suggest soy milk or almond milk.

These milk alternatives taste great and make for a great addition to the robust espresso coffee. If you have a great-tasting milk alternative, please let me know in the comments below; I’d love to give it a try!

How to make espresso coffee at home

The best espresso coffee is made using an espresso machine. If you have one at home, make sure to use it to make this recipe.

However, these machines tend to get quite pricey. If you’d like to try this recipe with a cheaper coffee brewer, I suggest using an AeroPress or Moka pot.

Finished coffee brew with the Moka pot.

These coffee brewers both make great-tasting espresso-like coffee. If you’d like to learn more about these coffee brewers, you can check out my beginner’s guide to brewing coffee.

If you’d instead use your handy Nespresso or Keurig coffee machine, this is a great option as well.

When doing so, I recommend using espresso coffee pods that are strong in flavor. If you choose to use a mellow coffee, the Americano Misto might taste a bit flat.

Prep Time 4 minutes
Additional Time 1 minute
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • Two espresso shots
  • 2 oz (60 ml) hot water
  • 4 oz (120 ml) steamed whole milk

Instructions

  1. Start brewing your espresso coffee. You can use any brewing technique I've mentioned in the article.
  2. Meanwhile, steam your whole milk. I like to use a milk frother for this. But you can also use your steaming wand from your espresso machine or heat your milk in a small saucepan.
  3. When your espresso coffee is made, pour it into a cup of choice.
  4. Pour the same amount (by weight) of hot water on top of the espresso coffee.
  5. Lastly, slowly pour your steamed milk into the glass. Give this all a stir for the most balanced flavor profile.

You've just made this incredibly easy, Americano Misto. I like to drink it pretty hot, so go ahead and serve it straight away and enjoy!

Notes

Two espresso shots are roughly 2 oz in weight. Remember, you can make this drink with as much coffee as you'd like. Have a look at the table above for the ratios.

You can choose to use any milk you'd normally use for this recipe. It's all up to you.

What is an Americano Misto at Starbucks?

An Americano Misto at Starbucks is an espresso-based drink made with two shots of their signature espresso roast and topped off with hot water and has steamed milk added for a creamier texture.

The result is a unique combination of concentrated dark coffee flavor from the espresso, complemented by creamy notes from the milk.

This delicious drink is only available to order when you’re in Canada and can be found on their website here.

If you’re from the U.S. or elsewhere, you can ask for an Americano with added steamed milk, resulting in the same drink!

Conclusion

This is one of the easiest and most delightful coffees I’ve made in the past months. I love to drink espresso. Sometimes, I like to order an Americano instead to enjoy the flavor a bit longer.

But adding steamed milk on top of this makes for such a magical drink. The flavors are perfectly combined, and I love that you can make it at home using different amounts of coffee and milk alternatives.
