Mochaccino. The name itself is enough to make your mouth water with the thoughts of the rich, creamy, chocolatey drink.

Making your own mochaccino at home is easier than you think. True, it does take a few steps, but it’s worth it — you can save money by making it at home, and you’ll never be disappointed.

In this article, I’ll discuss the mochaccino and why you may want to make this drink at home in the comfort of your own kitchen.

What is a mochaccino?

A mochaccino is a coffee-based drink that is made with espresso, chocolate syrup, and steamed milk. It is typically served with whipped cream and chocolate shavings on top.

If you love to drink cappuccinos for their foam topping, then you’ll also love this mochaccino because it has the same features as a cappuccino but with added chocolate.

You can choose to add some whipped cream to finish your mochaccino when brewing it at home.

Whipped cream gives your drink a more decadent look, and it also tastes great. Some chocolate shavings are optional but look great when serving this drink to your friends and family!

What does a mochaccino taste like?

A mochaccino tastes like a cappuccino with chocolate added. The chocolate adds a slight bitterness and sweetness to the coffee flavor, so it has a unique taste that is extremely rich.

The mochaccino has a great mouthfeel as well. Espresso and chocolate are two flavors that combine perfectly, providing a deep and rich taste.

Does a mochaccino have coffee in it?

Yes, a mochaccino typically contains coffee. A mochaccino is made by combining espresso and frothed milk with chocolate syrup. The chocolate syrup provides the flavor and color of the drink.

The chocolate flavor is pronounced in this drink, making it perfect for people who don’t like strong coffee or are not a fan of drinking coffee.

If you find the coffee flavor too strong, I recommend adding more chocolate syrup to your coffee and adjusting the flavor as you see fit.

You can also use some whipped cream and chocolate curls for added sweetness, but more on this below:

What is needed to make a mochaccino at home?

To make a mochaccino at home, you’ll need just three main ingredients to get started. Below, I’ve listed them and some optional components that you can use to make this drink extra special:

  • Espresso – You can brew the espresso with multiple coffee brewers, which I’ll cover further down in the article.
  • Milk of choice – I prefer to use whole milk for the fullest flavor, but you can use any milk you have at home.
  • Chocolate syrup can be homemade or store-bought. I’ve listed a recipe for the homemade version below.
  • Whipped cream is optional but will give your mochaccino some more decadence and a richer flavor.
  • Chocolate curls are also optional but will look great when serving this drink to your guests. Plus, it adds some more chocolate flavor to the mix!

There are a few different types of milk that can be used for a mochaccino. You can use whole milk or 2% milk for a richer and creamier drink. If you are looking for a lighter drink, you can use almond milk or soy milk.

Do you have a different kind of milk you’d like to use instead? Feel free to do so and experiment with the flavor combination.

What is the best way to make espresso at home?

The best way to make espresso at home is to invest in a good quality espresso machine. It will create creamy and rich espresso shots with a thick crema on top.

If you’re not interested in purchasing an espresso machine, you can also make espresso-like coffee using a stovetop Moka pot.

Finished coffee brew with the Moka pot.

This is a less expensive option, but it will not produce quite as good of a result as using an espresso machine, although it does come close to the strength of espresso made with an espresso machine.

You can check out the pros and cons of the Moka pot in this article. Over there, I’ll go in-depth about the Moka pot so you can decide if it’s a good coffee brewer for you.

Another great option is an AeroPress. It produces great-tasting espresso-like coffee, which works fantastic for this recipe.

It’s quick to brew coffee with it, and it’s also versatile, as you can also make a bigger cup of coffee with it. You can check out the pros and cons of this brewer here if you’re interested.

Brewing tip: Try brewing espresso with decaf coffee beans if you don’t want to consume caffeine after dinner! Plus, it doesn’t taste much different from regular coffee beans.

How do you make chocolate syrup at home?

You can easily make chocolate syrup at home with just three ingredients. It consists of cocoa powder, white granulated sugar, and some cold tap water.

Unlike chocolate sauce, this syrup is thinner in structure, so it is easier to combine in various coffees like this mochaccino.

It’s made using equal parts, so you can make as big of a batch as you like. Once it’s finished and bottled up, it looks like this:
