If you’re a fan of flat whites but are looking for a dairy-free alternative, here’s a yummy recipe for you to try! This recipe is very simple and takes 5 minutes to whip up. All you need is almond milk, coffee, and honey!

In recent years, there has been a huge surge in the number of people moving away from cow’s milk to favor another form of dairy known as almond milk.

This honey almondmilk flat white recipe is quick and easy to make at home with just three ingredients. It’s a much healthier version of your favorite coffee shop drink.

What is a honey almondmilk flat white?

A honey almond milk flat white is a coffee drink that consists of ristretto shots, steamed almond milk, and honey as the sweetener. The combination of these ingredients is something special, and once you taste it yourself, you’ll love it.

I like to order a flat white when I don’t feel like drinking espresso or ristretto as is. A flat white is made by combining strong coffee (usually ristretto is used) and is topped with foamed milk with the tiniest milk bubbles.

The combination of strong coffee and perfectly steamed milk is fantastic, and it makes for a unique drinking experience. If you want to learn to make a regular flat white, you can check out the recipe I wrote here.

What ingredients are used in this recipe?

There are just a few ingredients used to make this amazing coffee. Compared to a regular flat white, this recipe uses almond milk as the basis, but also the following ingredients are needed:

  • Almond milk
  • Honey
  • Two ristretto shots

The ristretto shots are the most important part of this coffee recipe. It needs to be full of flavor and have just the perfect amount of punch to cut through the almond milk and honey sweetness.

To create a perfectly brewed ristretto shot, you can check out the guide to brewing ristretto at home below the recipe card. I’ll show you how to make ristretto shots using an AeroPress.

Honey is a natural sweetener that is amazing in coffee. It makes for a sweeter, more flavorful coffee that is far different from using sugar or a coffee syrup in your coffee.

Did you know you can use honey in your coffee? I’ve written an article about the possibilities to combine honey with your daily cup of coffee; you can check it out here.

Let me guide you through the recipe, and after that, I’ll tell you about the number of calories in this drink and how to make the perfect ristretto shots at home:

Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 3 minutes
Total Time 6 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (0.18 l) of almond milk
  • 1/4 cup (0.06 l) of ristretto coffee (2 shots)
  • 1 tbsp (15 grams) of honey

Instructions

Now that you know what this coffee is all about, it's time to make it:

  1. Foam the almond milk until tiny milk bubbles start to form. You can do so by using a steaming wand on your espresso machine or using a milk foamer.
  2. While the almond milk is foaming, prepare your ristretto shots.
  3. In a large glass or mug, add the honey to the bottom of the glass.
  4. Pour your freshly brewed ristretto shots on top and stir. The honey and coffee will combine and make for the best drinking experience.
  5. Now, pour the foamed almond milk into the coffee-filled glass.

You've just made amazing honey and almond milk flavored flat white! I suggest serving straight away to keep as many milk bubbles intact.

Notes

You can always add a bit more honey to your flat white if you want to sweeten it up a bit.

How to make ristretto shots at home?

Ristretto shots are a big part of creating delicious coffee recipes in general, but it’s most important in this coffee recipe.

Almond milk tastes very different from cow’s milk and therefore requires a more flavorful and robust coffee that can handle the taste difference.

As I’ve mentioned in the recipe listed above, I like to use two shots of ristretto. The cup of almond milk needs to have a strong coffee to cut through the flavors and make more a balanced coffee flavor.

If you want to make ristretto at home, there are a few options. You can brew two ristretto shots with your espresso machine if you have one. However, most people don’t have an espresso machine at home, which is why I’ll tell you about a few other options.

You can also brew ristretto shots using your Nespresso or Keurig machine. If you want, you can also use espresso shots for this recipe. Although espresso shots are less punchy and flavorful, you’ll still make a great coffee from it!

The other options are making coffee with a Moka pot or AeroPress. If you want to learn how to brew coffee – and in particular ristretto, with the Moka pot, you can check out my guide to brewing coffee with the Moka pot here.

"Moka pot with freshly brewed coffee."

But today, I’ll guide you through the best and easiest way to make ristretto coffee at home, using the AeroPress.

To get started with this technique, finely grind 34 grams of dark or medium roasted coffee beans and follow the next steps to start brewing:

  1. Add a fresh filter to the AeroPress filter cap and twist it to your AeroPress cylinder.
  2. Place the AeroPress on a mug that is steady and won’t slip when pressing down.
  3. Add the finely ground coffee to the cylinder and boil about half a cup of water in the meantime.
  4. Set your cup with AeroPress on a kitchen scale so you can measure the water.
  5. Add 80 grams of water to the coffee-filled cylinder.
  6. Stir for 10 seconds with the stirring wand that was included with the AeroPress.
  7. After the 10 seconds have passed, remove the stirring wand from the cylinder.
  8. Place the second cylinder on top and press down on the AeroPress.
  9. Make sure that you have a good grip, so the AeroPress will not fly off your cup.
  10. Once fully pressed, remove the AeroPress from your coffee cup. You now have amazing strong ristretto coffee!

You can use this amount of coffee for the recipe listed above. Although it’s not the same as brewing espresso or ristretto coffee with an espresso machine, this technique works remarkably well to produce strong coffee that comes close to the flavor of ristretto shots made with an espresso machine.

It’s essential for the AeroPress that it gets a good cleaning after brewing. This will prolong the life of the coffee brewer, and it will save money in the long run.

If you want to learn how to clean your AeroPress properly, then I suggest checking out my guide to cleaning the AeroPress. In this guide, I show you 4 ways to clean your AeroPress.

Conclusion

This coffee is delicious and super easy to make once you’ve got all the ingredients at home. Most people have honey in their cabinets, and it’s getting more common to have a milk alternative at home as well.

I hope that once you try this recipe yourself, you’ll see (and taste!) how amazing this coffee is.
