Are you looking for a coffee that’s a little different from your standard cup of joe? Then you’ll want to try a Nespresso Americano.

This unique drink is made by combining espresso with hot water, and it’s perfect for those mornings when you need an energizing pick-me-up.

Wondering how to make one with your Nespresso machine? Then you’re in the right place. Keep reading for all the details!

What is a Nespresso Americano?

A Nespresso Americano is an espresso with added hot water, which makes it similar to a traditional coffee. The espresso coffee is made using a Nespresso pod of choice.

An Americano made with a Nespresso machine at home.

It’s called an Americano because the addition of hot water makes it similar to the coffee drinks that are popular in America.

Specifically, it’s like an espresso shot with added hot water to make it more like a typical cup of black coffee.

Which ingredients are needed for this recipe?

The best part about making this Americano with your Nespresso machine is that you only need to collect the following ingredients:

  • Espresso made with your Nespresso machine
  • Off-the-boil water

There are a few ways to customize your Americano, which I’ll get into later.

But first, it’s time to review the best pods. As there are many options out there, here are my thoughts on the best ones to use:

Which Nespresso pod is best to use?

There are a ton of Nespresso pods to choose from. To make it easier for you, I’ve divided the following section into the Original and Vertuo line.

So depending on the Nespresso machine you have at home, you can easily go through my recommendations below:

Original line

The Original line of Nespresso pods are all fantastic, but the India and Capriccio pods are my personal favorites.

The India pods have a rich, intense flavor that is perfect for coffee lovers who want a strong cup of coffee.

While the Capriccio has a lower intensity level and is made with light-roasted ground coffee, giving it a smoother flavor:

The Roma has a strong and intense coffee flavor that I love. It’s perfect for those who like a bold cup of coffee.

Vertuo line

Now, if you have a Vertuo line Nespresso machine, there are even more options to choose from.

The Altissio Nespresso pods are probably my favorite, as they are perfectly balanced. They’re not too strong, making it the perfect pod for this Americano recipe.

The Diavollito pods might be your best bet if you like a bolder flavor. With an intensity of 11, it’s stronger than the Altissio, but still has a nice flavor to it:

Keep in mind that these are just a few of my favorite Nespresso pods for espresso. And you can check out even more of them in this article.

Feel free to use your favorite espresso pod to see which will fit your taste the best!

What is the best coffee-to-water ratio for an Americano?

The best coffee-to-water ratio for an Americano is 1:2, meaning one part coffee to two parts water. This will result in a well-balanced and flavorful cup of coffee.

If you prefer a stronger or weaker cup of coffee, simply adjust the ratio accordingly.

For a stronger cup, use a 1:1 ratio; for a weaker one, use a 1:3 or even 1:4 ratio.

Americano variations to try

If you want to try a different variation to the classic Americano, there are a few amazing recipes to try.

Depending on the weather and what kind of flavor you’re looking for, I suggest one of the following options:

  • Iced Americano – If you’re looking for a refreshing drink to make with your Nespresso machine, this is it. Cooled with ice cubes, the recipe steps are just as easy to follow.
  • White Americano is the perfect drink if you love adding a tiny bit of milk to your coffee. You can choose to add cold milk or steamed milk or use milk foam only.
  • An Americano with milk is made with more milk than the white Americano and is the perfect drink to try if you love a latte regularly.
  • Americano Misto is another take on the original that uses steamed milk for that perfectly balanced flavor!

As you can see, you can make your own variation of this delicious drink at home. Below are some of the best ways to sweeten it to taste:

How do you sweeten this Americano?

There are a few ways to sweeten an Americano. You could add sugar to the coffee or use a sweetener like honey for a more natural taste:

Honey is a small glass cup.

If you’re looking for a healthier option, add a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder to your coffee.

This will give it a chocolate flavor and will make it slightly sweeter.

One of the above-listed recipes will work perfectly if you like adding milk to your coffee.

You could also sweeten your Americano with coffee syrups. You can check out my homemade coffee syrups here.

A favorite of mine is the vanilla syrup that you can make in just five minutes. It looks like this when cooled and bottled:

These are just a few options, and there are many ways to sweeten your Americano. Experiment with a few sweeteners and see which you like the best!

How do you make an Americano with a Nespresso machine?

An Americano is an espresso with added hot water, typically to make it more like a regular coffee.

With a Nespresso machine, you can follow the easy steps below:

  1. Fill the water tank to the desired level.
  2. Insert a pod of your preferred flavor into the machine.
  3. Place a cup under the spout.
  4. Press the espresso button to brew the coffee.
  5. Meanwhile, boil some additional water using a kettle.
  6. Once it has finished brewing, eject the pod.
  7. Pour hot water into the cup until it reaches the desired level of dilution.

If you don’t have access to a kettle and are using a Nespresso Original line machine, you can remove the Nespresso pods from the machine and press the espresso button to get hot water into your cup.

The downside of this option is that you get all the build-up coffee particles from your machine in your Americano.

A better way would be to rinse the machine once after removing the coffee cup and then continue pressing the espresso button for hot water.

However, this will require you to get an additional cup to collect the water. So I find that using a kettle is the best option.
