Let's begin!

What is an iced mocha?

An iced mocha is coffee (or espresso) mixed with milk and chocolate, served over ice, and often finished with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

The great part about an iced mocha is the ingredients used.

By making this drink at home, you can combine your favorite ingredients to create a fantastic iced coffee.

What ingredients are in an iced mocha?

An iced mocha uses a few ingredients you might already have at home, which is great for easy access.

The ingredients used are as follows:

  • Cooled brewed coffee (or espresso)
  • Milk of choice (I used whole milk for this recipe)
  • Homemade chocolate sauce (or store-bought chocolate sauce)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: whipped cream
Ingredients used to make an iced mocha at home.

This recipe is easy to make in just a few minutes once you've prepared your coffee and chocolate sauce (if you prefer to make it homemade) ahead of time.

The initial preparation time for the components will take just a few minutes, excluding the cooling time in the refrigerator, but after that, you can assemble this recipe within a minute.

It's a great way to start your day or enjoy a coffee and chocolate drink in the afternoon on a hot summer day.

What coffee is used in an iced mocha?

An iced mocha is best made with freshly brewed coffee that has been cooled completely.

You can make this recipe with any cooled coffee you prefer, like, pour over coffee or even the more robust French press coffee.

I like to use pour over coffee for this recipe as it has just the right amount of robust flavor and is also very balanced.

It goes great with the sweetness of the chocolate and the added whipped cream.

What do iced mochas taste like?

Iced mocha coffee tastes sweet, with the perfect amount of freshly brewed coffee. The chocolate sauce makes for the perfect addition to an already amazing coffee drink.

I can describe the drink's flavor as a very balanced coffee drink, with a hint of chocolate that makes it just right.

Then there are the ice cubes that make this drink so refreshing and delightful. But, of course, you can also use coffee ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes when you plan on sipping on your coffee in the sun.

The coffee ice cubes will prevent diluting your iced mocha with water, leaving you with extra coffee flavor instead.

Yield: 1 Serving

Iced Mocha

This easy iced mocha recipe is perfect for drinking in the summer for a refreshing start to the day.

Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 2 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (0.12 l) of brewed coffee (cooled)
  • 1/2 cup (0.12 l) of whole milk
  • 2 tbsp (30 grams) of chocolate sauce
  • Ice cubes
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

Once you've prepared the chocolate sauce, it's time to assemble the iced mocha:

  1. Add the chocolate sauce to a tall glass of choice.
  2. Pour in the cooled brewed coffee and give this a stir.
  3. Add enough ice cubes to give the drink a cool touch. I like to fill the glass up to about halfway.
  4. Next, slowly pour in the milk.
  5. Add a serving of whipped cream to the iced mocha.
  6. Additionally, you can grade just a bit of dark chocolate on top. It will give the drink its unique look and will give it an even more chocolate taste!

I suggest serving the drink as soon as possible for the most refreshing experience.

Notes

The whipped cream is optional in this recipe, but it adds a nice depth to the coffee, so I highly recommend adding it.

Stir the iced mocha right before drinking for the full experience, or serve with a straw.

How many calories are in an iced mocha?

This iced mocha comes in at around 153 calories per serving, depending on the type of milk used and the amount of chocolate sauce and whipped cream added.

This number is made up of the different components of the coffee drink. The biggest number of calories is from the milk added.

Down below, I've broken down the calories for each ingredient. This way, you can see what contributes the most and swap ingredients based on your preferences:

  • The amount of whole milk used in this recipe provides about 73 calories.
  • The homemade chocolate sauce adds about 28 calories.
  • Adding whipped cream can add approximately 52 calories per serving, depending on the amount used.

As you can see, whole milk accounts for a significant portion of the calories in the iced coffee.

If you'd like a less rich iced mocha, try a different milk (or use a smaller splash) and see what you like best.

Milk alternatives are a great way to change the flavor and texture of your iced coffee, and their nutritional content can vary a lot by brand.

If you're using store-bought chocolate sauce, refer to the nutritional information on the bottle and subtract the number of calories I mentioned earlier from the total.

How to make the chocolate sauce at home

Making chocolate sauce at home is incredibly easy, and you'll have a batch ready in just a few minutes.

The recipe for chocolate sauce listed below yields approximately ten servings of chocolate-flavored iced coffee.

You'll need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup (0.12 L) of cocoa powder
  • 120 grams of white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (0.12 L) of cold tap water

This is a basic chocolate sauce that goes with everything. If you want to spice it up, you can also add a bit of vanilla extract for a more powerful sauce.

To make the sauce, follow the next steps:

  1. In a small saucepan, preferably with a handle, add the cocoa powder, white granulated sugar, and water.
  2. Place it on the stove on medium heat.
  3. Keep stirring the chocolate sauce until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce has thickened slightly. I found that this takes no more than two minutes.
  4. After the sugar has dissolved, remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Let the chocolate sauce cool slightly and store it in an airtight container.

You can store the chocolate sauce in the refrigerator for a few days. It's best to make a big batch if you want to make a few of these iced coffees in the upcoming days.

Tip: If you have some leftover chocolate sauce, you can also make an Iced Mocha Latte. Or even a hot version of the Mocha latte!

The iced coffee recipe above uses the same chocolate sauce to easily create different recipes with this sweet sauce.

Conclusion

This recipe is perfect in the sense that it has just the right amount of flavors combined. I like that you can make this recipe however you wish to give it your own twist.

The homemade chocolate sauce is great if you don't want to go out and pick up a bottle of chocolate sauce from your local supermarket.

And it tastes just as impressive, if not better!

      Hey Tracy,

The cocoa powder can be sweetened or unsweetened. However, cooking or baking powder is different from cocoa powder, so make sure you’re using cocoa powder in this recipe.

Let me know how it turns out!
