Which ingredients are needed to make honey syrup?

The best part about making honey syrup at home is that you only need two ingredients:

  • Honey
  • Cold tap water
All of the ingredients needed to make honey syrup at home.

Because this recipe only requires two ingredients, it's best to make sure that you use high-quality ingredients.

Using good honey is an essential part of this recipe:

What is the best ratio of honey to water?

When making honey syrup, the ratio of honey to water generally depends on how sweet you want it to be.

Many people prefer a 1:1 ratio, which yields a syrup that has a mild sweetness.

A jar of honey.

This type of syrup is often used as an alternative to sugar or simple syrups in cocktails and other beverages.

If you prefer a sweeter taste, I recommend using a 2:1 ratio of honey to water.

This will create a thick, more intensely flavored syrup with more pronounced sweetness than the 1:1 mixture.

For comparison, the typical ratio for simple syrups (sugar dissolved in water) is also 1:1.

So, this would be your best bet if you're after an equally sweet result but with the delicious flavor complexity that only comes from honey-infused syrups!

How long can you store honey syrup?

Homemade honey syrup is a great way to add natural sweetness and flavor to your beverages.

It can last up to a month in the refrigerator when stored correctly.

Proper storage and handling are crucial to maintaining the freshness of your homemade honey syrup for an extended period.

To begin with, keep any jars or containers you use for storing the honey syrup clean and sterile.

Ensure they're sealed tightly; airtight glass containers are ideal because they prevent oxidation while also blocking out any contaminants that could affect the flavor of your syrup.

I prefer using a glass flask for my coffee syrups, but you can also use mason jars for easy storage:

A mason jar and glass flask next to each other.

I usually make a smaller batch of honey syrup, just like other coffee syrups.

Tip: You can also use this mason jar to brew cold brew! Check out this recipe here.

The reason for this is that after some time, the syrup will start to lose its flavor, so I prefer to make a new batch instead.

I usually store this syrup for two to three weeks before making a new batch. Label your syrup correctly so that you can keep track of things easily.
