Illy
Francesco Illy founded illycaffè in Trieste, Italy, back in 1933. Two years later, in 1935, he built the Illetta, the machine that modern espresso machines are still based on.

Illy
Illy plays it exclusive, unfortunately, so you can't just pop its pods into any third-party machine.
The iperEspresso capsule range only brews in an Illy iperEspresso machine.
Illy does make aluminum pods that work with Nespresso Original coffee machines, just not the models bought after July 25, 2016 (Prodigio, Prodigio&Milk, U, Umilk, Expert, Expert&Milk).

Illy and Nespresso are both high-quality coffee brands, and neither one really wins outright.
