It’s one of the easiest and most effective methods of making cold brew coffee, and in this article, I’ll be taking a look at one of the best cold brew pots on the market today, the Hario Mizudashi.

This is an affordable and easy-to-use cold brew method, making it one of the best ways to make cold brew coffee right at home on a budget.

Let’s jump into my thoughts about this coffee brewer and tell you all about it. I’ll start with the unboxing and show you everything there’s to know about the cold brew maker.

Unboxing the cold brew pot

When opening the cold brew pot box, you’re met with a warning that the glassware needs to be handled with care. I really like that they put this here, where you can see it, and you know what you’re in for.

The cold brew pot has three main parts and some additional bookwork inside the box. It comes with a glass beaker, a fine-mesh sieve, and a lid:

What I immediately noticed about this coffee pot is that the quality is fantastic and nicely finished.

I recommend rinsing the coffee pot before using it to brew coffee. I noticed a light plastic or carton smell from the start.

However, this was gone when I rinsed it with some hot water. I think the smell comes from the coffee pot sitting in the carton box for a long period.

Is the Hario Mizudashi easy to use?

There are a plethora of ways to make cold brew coffee at home in the modern era. Some require fancy equipment, some require less fancy equipment, and some don’t even require any equipment at all.

The easiest way to make cold brew is by using the Japanese cold brew pot known as a “Hario Mizudashi”.

This cold brew maker is extremely easy to use, and there are so many things I like.

The design of the cold brew maker is what stands out the most for me; because of its straightforward design, it’s really easy to use, and you’ll likely never run into trouble.

I’ve listed the way I like to make cold brew coffee with Hario Mizudashi a bit further down. But first, there are a few more things I like to touch on before showing you how to make cold brew with it.

These are the things I like:

The capacity of the Hario Mizudashi

There are two sizes of the Hario Mizudashi, and today I’m reviewing the 1000ml. There’s also a 600ml version that you can buy when you’re not expecting to make such a large amount of cold brew coffee at once.

I mostly make cold brew coffee in a French press as this was the easiest way to make cold brew coffee before I bought the Hario Mizudashi, that is.

The 1000ml version is huge, and you’ll be able to make a huge batch of coffee in a matter of minutes, not counting the steeping hours.

Most of the time, you’ll use a smaller amount of cold brew coffee and add some milk or milk alternative to it, which is why this is just the perfect amount of coffee to make at once.

All the times that I’ve brewed coffee with this cold brew maker, I’ve had enough cold brew to last me at least two days and getting seven or eight cold brew servings out of it.

How’s the design of the Hario Mizudashi?

The tall and sleek design of the Hario Mizudashi is a big part of what makes this cold brew pot unique. As this coffee pod has such a big capacity, there were two ways they could’ve designed this coffee pod.

I’m glad that they went with the tall and sleek design, as this makes storing the coffee pod so much easier.

After steeping and filtering, which I’ll show you later on, you just have to pop on the cap, and you can place it in your refrigerator for the upcoming days. You can check the image below to see how easy this is:

I’ve definitely seen prices higher than this cold brew maker, and the other points I touch on in this review definitely suit the price.

However, I’ve definitely seen cold brewers cheaper than this, but it might not be the best quality. The Hario Mizudashi is a great investment, and I think it will last you a really long time.

The brewer’s quality is there, and all the components seem that they will last a long time. I’m happy with my purchase, and I’m sure you’ll love this brewer as much as I do.

How does the filter system work?

The filter system with the fine mesh sieve is something else. I’ve never seen such a great filter that actually works quickly and easily.

The sleek filter stays in the beaker of the cold brew maker while steeping, and you can remove it afterward.

When removing the filter, it’ll leave you with such a clean cold brew coffee. It really amazed me. There were no small coffee particles to be found and no sludge on the bottom.

Even better was the filter cap attached to the bottom of the filter. The filter cap can be removed when throwing out the ground coffee and makes for an easy cleaning experience:

When filtering the coffee using a French press, for example, you’d have to double filter the cold brew coffee to achieve the same results. Well, you’ll no longer have to go through that trouble ever again!

Making cold brew with the Hario Mizudashi

Making cold brew coffee with this cold brew maker is extremely easy. All you have to do is add ground coffee beans to the filter and pour cold water on top.

But wait, I’ve got some tips that might come in handy when you want to brew some cold brewed coffee with the Hario Mizudashi yourself:

When I got to test this cold brew maker, I started using 100 grams of ground coffee to 1200 grams of water. I noticed that the gap at the top was at risk of overflowing.

The coffee grounds tend to expend by sucking in that cold water, so the first time making coffee with it, the cold brew maker did overflow for me.

Since then, I’ve switched to 100 grams of ground coffee and 1150 grams of water instead. I suggest you do the same, especially if you’re placing the cold brew pot in a place where it might be moved from one side to the other a lot.

To make cold brew coffee with this cold brew maker, you’ll need the following items:

You can use medium or dark roasted coffee beans for this technique. Dark roasted coffee beans will give you that distinct and robust cold brew coffee flavor that you might’ve had before.

On the other hand, medium roasted coffee beans are a bit sweeter and give off a less punchy flavor that is best enjoyed as is and not diluted with water, milk, or a milk alternative.

To prepare the cold brew coffee using the Hario Mizudashi, follow the next steps:

  1. Place the filter basket in the beaker.
  2. Add your ground coffee beans (100 grams) to the filter basket.
  3. Pour the cold water (1150 grams) through the coffee bed into the beaker.
  4. By pouring the water through the coffee beans, all coffee beans are equally wetted and will start to give off their flavor straight away.
  5. Place the lid on top of your cold brew maker and set it aside on your kitchen counter for the next 15 hours.
  6. After steeping for 15 hours, remove the cap from the beaker.
  7. Grab the sieve out of the beaker and place it in your sink.
  8. Add the cap to the beaker once again and store it in the refrigerator.
  9. Throw out the ground coffee beans by removing the small cap at the bottom of the fine-mesh sieve.
  10. After throwing out the coffee ground, rinse the filter and let air dry.

You’ve now made amazing coffee using the Hario Mizudashi. The best part about this is that you can store the cold brew coffee in the same beaker you’ve made it in; no more pouring it into a different container once filtered.

This saves so much trouble and time; it’s amazing. The steeped coffee looks like this:

After you’ve finished your cold brew coffee, either make some again or store the cold brew maker in a safe place where you will not knock it over. I suggest putting the brewer back together when storing it to avoid losing any parts.
