Have you ever wondered which pod fits your Nespresso machine? Let’s clear it up once and for all.

Choosing the right Nespresso pod can be confusing. With two systems, the Original and Vertuo, not every capsule is compatible with every machine.

Quick Answer: Which pod fits my Nespresso machine?

Nespresso has two pod systems: the Original Line (slim, flat-top capsules) and the Vertuo Line (dome-shaped capsules with barcodes). Original and Vertuo pods are not interchangeable.

You can use my Nespresso pod compatibility checker below to confirm whether you have an Original Line or Vertuo model and see which pods (including Alto XL) your machine can use:

Which Pod Fits My Nespresso Machine? Compatibility Guide

Understanding Nespresso pod systems

Nespresso makes two types of coffee machines. Each uses its own unique pod design, and they do not cross over.

Once you know which system your machine belongs to, you’ll always know which pods fit. Below, I’ll go over each so you know exactly which pods to buy!

Nespresso Original Line machines

Nespresso machine examples include: Essenza, Pixie, Inissia, CitiZ, Lattissima (Original), and Creatista (Original).

The Original Line was Nespresso’s first system and remains very popular. It brews coffee using pressure extraction, just like a traditional espresso machine.

Here’s how you can tell you’ve got an Original Line machine:

  • Pod shape: Slim, flat-topped aluminum capsules
  • Coffee sizes: Ristretto (25 ml), espresso (40 ml), and Lungo (110 ml). Some machines with milk frothers can also prepare cappuccinos and lattes
  • Brewing style: Uses a pump to force hot water through the pod at high pressure, creating a rich crema
  • Third-party options: Widely available. Many brands (Starbucks, Lavazza, Illy, and even supermarket labels) make Original-compatible capsules

If you enjoy variety and want the flexibility to buy pods from different brands, the Original Line is your best choice.

Nespresso Vertuo machines

Here are a few examples: Vertuo, Vertuo Plus, Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Creatista, Vertuo Lattissima.

The Vertuo Line is Nespresso’s newer system, built for versatility.

Instead of using pump pressure, Vertuo machines rely on centrifusion technology: the pod spins at high speed while hot water is injected, and the barcode tells the machine how to brew it.

Here’s what the machine is known for:

  • Pod shape: Dome-shaped capsules with a barcode around the rim
  • Pod sizes: From a 40 ml espresso up to a 535 ml carafe
  • Brewing style: Pods spin at up to 7,000 rpm, blending water and coffee for a consistent crema
  • Third-party options: Very limited. In most markets, Vertuo machines mainly use Nespresso's own pods, so you'll have fewer choices and higher prices than with the Original Line.

If you love large mugs and want multiple cup sizes, Vertuo machines are ideal, but you’ll need to stick with Nespresso’s own capsules.

1 What do you drink most?
2 Do you want third-party pods or cheaper pod variety?
3 Do you want the widest cup-size range (mug + carafe options)?

Quick note: Original and Vertuo pods are not interchangeable, and there is not a machine that uses both pod types.

Now, let’s continue to learn more about them and which machine can brew the Alto XL pods below!

Which pod fits my Nespresso machine?

To quickly check which coffee pods fit in your machine, you just have to know the following:

  • Original Line machines use slim, flat-top Original pods
  • Vertuo machines use dome-shaped barcode pods

Quick tip: If your pod has a barcode, it’s for a Vertuo machine. If it has a flat aluminum top, it’s for an Original machine.

Which Nespresso machine is compatible with Alto XL pods?

The Alto XL pod is a larger Vertuo capsule designed for a 355 ml coffee. But it only works with certain machines.

The Alto XL Ambrato and Onice are exclusively compatible with:

  • Vertuo Creatista
  • Vertuo Lattissima
  • Vertuo Next
  • Vertuo Pop

Nespresso’s Alto XL pods are not compatible with:

  • Vertuo Plus
  • Any other Vertuo models
  • All Original Line machines

To enjoy Alto XL coffee, ensure you own one of the four Vertuo machines listed above, as they are required to brew the coffee at home.

How to tell which machine you have

The easiest way to determine which Nespresso machine you own is by examining the type of pods it uses.

If your machine takes slim, flat-top capsules, it’s part of the Original Line.

In contrast, dome-shaped pods with barcodes indicate that you have a Vertuo machine.

Another giveaway is the model name; machines like Pixie, Essenza, Inissia, and CitiZ belong to the Original range.

The Vertuo, Vertuo Plus, Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Creatista, and Vertuo Lattissima are all Vertuo models.

You’ll also notice differences when brewing: Original machines deliver quick, pump-driven espresso shots, while Vertuo machines spin the capsule and often produce larger mug or carafe servings.

FAQ’s about Nespresso pods

You might have a few more questions about your Nespresso machine and the coffee pods to use. Check out the FAQ’s below:

Can I use Vertuo pods in an Original machine?

No, Vertuo pods do not fit Original machines.

Can I use Original pods in a Vertuo machine?

No, Original pods are too small and lack the barcode that Vertuo machines require.

Which Nespresso machine takes third-party pods?

Only the Original Line can use third-party pods. The Vertuo system only allows Nespresso pods made exclusively by Nespresso.

How do I know if I have a Vertuo or Original machine?

Original Line is known for its flat-top pods, which do not have a barcode. The Vertuo pods are dome-shaped, featuring barcodes and a spinning brew system.

Conclusion

When it comes to Nespresso pods, the key is knowing your machine:

  • Original Line uses flat-top capsules (with numerous third-party choices, such as Illy!).
  • Vertuo machines only use dome-shaped barcode capsules (Nespresso-only pods)

And remember: Alto XL pods are only compatible with the Vertuo Creatista, Vertuo Lattissima, Vertuo Next, and Vertuo Pop.

Now you can confidently buy the right pods and enjoy your Nespresso coffee without any surprises.
